Game Concept

Samhain is an adventure and platform game, with rpg elements that seeks, essentially, to give the player an experience of empathy and rediscovery through the story of a character with amnesia and his fight against his fears in search of his lost memory.

Storyline

Night of October 31, 1989. A girl is with her friends returning from a traditional festival, when the group decides to cut a path through the woods and play a prank on her, despite being against the idea, knowing her fear of that place, ends up accepting. One by one of her friends begins to disappear, when she finds herself alone and bewildered by the fog of the place, she starts running towards the only light she can see, but she doesn't realize that she is going towards an abyss, in a wrong step she ends up slipping and falling.

The protagonist, falling into an abyss, wakes up lost and without memory in a forest of absolute darkness, her only memory comes from a red scarf that seems to accompany her since she was a child. Guided by a light and a mysterious woman embarks on a journey in search of fragments of her memory to understand who she really is.

Game objective and challanges

Samhain proposes to challenge the player from the need to cross obstacles that present themselves in 2 ways, the first is platforms and the second is combat, this way the player aims to overcome all obstacles facing enemies to reach the last part of each phase and face the boss to obtain a fragment of memory. The game is complete when all memory fragments are collected from the regions and the true story of the character is discovered.

Characters

Cachecol - Main character, a girl with manu fears, but somehow finds the courage to face them.


Córtex - The materialization of the heroine consciousness and memory, somehow knows the world of Samhain and will guide her through the regions.



Aurora - Mysterious woman who with her powers controls the world of Samhain and for some hidden reason has an interest in the heroine choices..


Dark Knight - A knight who doesn't obey anyone orders and chases the heroine all over Samhain world, even though she doesn't understand why. 

Development

Samhain seeks mainly to make the player question and reflect on the origin of fears inherent to human beings, providing a reflection for self-discovery and how society contributes to the strengthening of the fears of each one of us. This whole process is related to parts of the process that is life and the game ends up being a way to explore the process of accepting and facing fears in an artistic and playful way.

Samhain is being built from "free assets" found on sites like https://itch.io and https://opengameart.org, this premise was established as a way to show the quality found in the arts produced by the community. The Game Design Document (GDD) can be freely accessed on the link provided(only in Portuguese), demonstrating part of the process of idealizing the game and its story.
